America during the 1930s
These discussion sessions will be held on Each session will be facilitated by a scholar or teacher of this period. Learn more about the causes and effects of the Great Depression in America, glimpse the experiences of everyday people, and find parallels with the present. Readings will include 1930’s history, Depression-era letters, as well as period fiction and other selections. Viewing historical photographs and textiles from the History Center archives will add a new dimension to our exploration of a pivotal time in national and local history. Participants will receive personal copies of the selected texts. Because group size is limited to fifteen participants, please pre-register for this program.

This fall, the History Center in Tompkins County will
offer a monthly adult reading group on the Great Depression. This
timely discussion series will provide an engaging forum for participants
to explore both historical and contemporary connections with this
year’s Community Read, The Grapes of Wrath, which is the group’s first
book.
