Festival Happenings

Rhine Neighborhood Diorama:

A scale model of Ithaca's old Rhine neighborhood is available for viewing on the second floor of Alternatives Federal Credit Union. The diorama is a detailed re-creation of the city's West End as it looked before Inlet Island was created in the 1960s by the construction of the flood-control channel and the notorious "Octopus" intersection. On the day of the Rhiners Festival, the diorama's creator, David Fogel, will be on hand to show the model to the public from 10:30am to 1pm on Saturday, September 19th, in the 2nd-floor lobby of Alternatives, located at 125 North Fulton St. Please take the elevator inside the front entrance. It can be viewed at other times: 9-5, Monday-Friday, 10-1 Saturday.

This event will be the after-hours continuation of the first annual Rhiner Festival, a celebration of the early inhabitants and rowdy history of Ithaca's West End. When the music and activities wind down outside, the transformation of Castaways will commence, complete with a moonshine still, silent movies, cigarette girls and Ithaca's finest Vaudeville pit band, the Evil City Trio. (look them up on MySpace.) The highlight of the evening will be an old-school variety show. Already from the fertile waters of local talent have been harvested lovely ladies of burlesque, singers, acrobatic dancers, animal tricksters, stand-up comics and much much more!
