Here are June's 12 great reasons to confirm that much is happening at The History Center! We ARE part of history today! 1 Because it’s summer and time to eat ice cream!! Please join us on June 23rd from 7-9pm for an ice cream social and to watch: 2 Our Director, Gary Reinbolt, to appear on the History Channel’s ‘Modern Marvels’ program, to discuss the history of the ice cream sundae in Ithaca. We invite you to the History Center to watch the show with us as it airs at 8pm on Monday, June 23rd. 3Postcards
for Peace 4 Because in addition to peace, ‘Postcards for Peace’ reminds us of another community-based project which took place in 1988. Titled, One Day in Ithaca: May 17th, 1988, in conjunction with the city’s Centennial Celebration, local residents were asked to ‘write in’ their impressions of life in Ithaca, to be stored in an archive which would be made available to future generations, to be unveiled at the next centennial in 2088. A selection of the participating entries were published in a book titled, One Day in Ithaca: May 17th, 1988 (Carol Kammen, ed.) In commemoration of event, and in conjunction with the ‘postcards for peace’ initiative, The History Center in Tompkins County is making available original copies of the 1988 publication for only $7 a copy. Purchase one now and add a fascinating piece of local history to your personal archive. To order a copy of the book, please contact Agata at:607. 273.8284 ext. 0 or e-mail welcome@TheHistoryCenter.net. 5 History Center Book Club to meet on June 24th to watch ‘Coming Out Under Fire’ at 6pm. 6 Our collection of local historic dentist photos, perfect for ‘waiting room’ walls - Be the first in town to honor your dentist for making your pearly whites sparkle with one of our charming historic images! 7 Because it’s time for The Ithaca Festival! 8 Because photos from the Sol Goldberg collection are now available for sale!
