From Alf Landon to Barack Obama: Ithaca
Votes for President in 2008

In 1936, at the height of the New Deal, Republican Alf Landon defeated Democratic incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt in Ithaca and Tompkins County elections. Today, city and county residents are poised to cast a majority of their votes for Democrat Barack Obama. What explains the transformation in local presidential elections? Why has Ithaca and Tompkins County voted overwhelmingly Democratic in the last generation? What factors will shape the vote for president this November?

The History Center presents an examination of Tompkins County’s voting trends featuring Andrew Tutino, opinion editor of The Ithaca Journal.

Thursday, September 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
At the History Center in Tompkins County
401 E. State Street, Suite 100
Ithaca, NY 14850

This event is free and open to the public.
A question and answer session will follow Mr. Tutino’s presentation..
