This event is part of Ithaca Loves Teachers but is open to all members of the public. You do not have to be a registered ILT member to participate.

Join local artist Gerry Monaghan as he shares about Active Ancestry and the Ancestor Project.

Local artist Gerry Monaghan will share about the Ancestor Project. Bring your old photos, slides and negatives and practice scanning with just an iPad and an iPhone and a few other household items. He will then show you all kinds of creative ways to work with your old lives and negatives that are creative and fun. “We create new artifacts from the old."

Participants can bring their slides, negatives and old photos to learn how to set up a scanner using a cell phone and an iPad and a few common household items. They can then see how to bring the images onto a computer. Gerry will then demonstrate Photoshop or show them how to use PhotoPea. He will have slides and negatives on hand so people can play and learn the equipment.

Mining his personal photography and family albums has become a rich source of inspiration for Gerry’s  art and his craft. The Ancestor Project evolved out of Gerry's need to reclaim his family photos which were badly damaged. He used his years of experience working as an imaging specialist to painstakingly digitally restore and recreate his family photographs. “For me, photo restoration is as much fun as a jigsaw puzzle” says Gerry

By participating in Active Ancestry, people can engage in preserving personal history. They create new artifacts by freeing the images from our original. He also has lots of work arounds for people who don’t have photoshop or a scanner. The goal of the Ancestor Project is to help people in creating artifacts of personal history.

Possible projects include

  • Digital Photo restoration & photo montage
  • Small run desktop publishing of miniature books, biographies, family cookbooks
  • Heirloom & keepsakes
  • Memorials & tributes
  • Creating artifacts through crafting
