Who We Are

The History Center

The History Center is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to preserve and encourage access to its unique collections, while designing learning experiences and services that create opportunities for people to learn about themselves and their place in the world.

With this objective in mind, we organize exhibitions, educational programs, and partner with a diverse range of non-profit organizations throughout Tompkins County to bring original, research-based educational services to the public.

The History Center is located in the Gateway Center on 401 East State Street, Ithaca, NY, five minutes walking from the Commons, and is open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. (Pictured above).

The Eight Square Schoolhouse

The History Center also owns, and recently restored, the Eight Square Schoolhouse, an historic 1827 schoolhouse home to The History Center’s living history program. The Eight Square Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (pictured right).

Eight Square schoolhouse is located on Upper Hanshaw Road in Dryden, New York. Upper Hanshaw Road is approximately 1/4 mile East of the Tompkins County Regional Airport.
