Who We Are

The History Center

The History Center is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to preserve and encourage access to its unique collections, while designing learning experiences and services that create opportunities for people to learn about themselves and their place in the world.

With this objective in mind, we organize exhibitions, educational programs, and partner with a diverse range of non-profit organizations throughout Tompkins County to bring original, research-based educational services to the public.

The History Center is now located within the Tompkins Center for History and Culture at 110 North Tioga Street, Ithaca, NY. The exhibit hall opens May 10 and the Cornell Local History Research Library opens May 21.

The Eight Square Schoolhouse

The History Center owns and maintains the recently restored Eight Square Schoolhouse. Built in 1827, the Eight Square Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is located on Upper Hanshaw Road in Dryden, New York. Upper Hanshaw Road is approximately 1/4 mile East of the Tompkins County Regional Airport.

The schoolhouse operates seasonally. Contact eightsquare@thehistorycenter.net with any questions.
