50 Years of Ellis Hollow Quilting - 1966-2016

This booklet shows 49 color photos of all the quilts except the 1974 Bird quilt, the only one for which we have yet found no records. We are still collecting information on all the quilts. The Ellis Hollow Quilts are more than just yearly quilts, they represent not only the beauty of the area but also the soul of the women that design and stitch them. Throughout the years, these women have gotten together for hundreds of hours to bring simple remnants of fabric into pieces of art that speak volumes. Although these women come from different backgrounds, countries, and generations, they get together for the purpose of telling different stories with each quilt. This has been done for 50 years - we wonder if there is any other quilting group in the country that has survived this long.

In 1965 my husband and I moved from Buffalo NY to Ithaca NY. Sometime in 1966 my neighbor and I started attending the monthly meetings of an evening Women's Group, which was held in various homes. At one meeting someone suggested making a quilt of Ellis Hollow themes for the 1966 Fair, and we started making our first quilt. My square was for maple sugaring. This success led to the tradition of making a quilt each year for the fair...
