“King Alcohol Ends Reign”

Ithaca’s Prohibition History Walking Tour

Join Us Next Summer For This Tour

  • DescrTour Overview

In the early 1900s, Ithaca, NY earned some colorful nicknames: “Sodom,” “Sin City,” and “Rum Town, USA.” Long before national Prohibition took hold, Ithacans were already battling over booze, morality, and modernity.

“King Alcohol Ends Reign” is a 10-block walking tour through downtown Ithaca that traces the city’s spirited (and often surprising) history with Prohibition. Led by trained docents from The History Center, this 60–70 minute experience takes you to the actual sites of speakeasies, dry raids, church protests, saloons, and reform rallies—uncovering how Ithaca became one of the first cities in New York State to go dry.

Through historic images, newspaper headlines, and stories of resistance and reform, you’ll see the city in a whole new light. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, you’ll never look at downtown Ithaca the same way again.iption text goes here

Proudly sponsored by the Strand Cafe - where you can now enjoy your spirits without a secret password.

“Shadows over Cayuga”

Ithaca’s True Crime History Walking Tour

Join Us Next Summer For This Tour

  • Beneath Ithaca’s natural beauty lies a darker history. Jealousy, greed, shame, and pride have all left their mark in a trail of poisonings, jailbreaks, obscenity cases, dog attacks, and cold-blooded murder. “Shadows Over Cayuga” is your invitation to uncover some of the most captivating and bizarre true crime stories from Tompkins County’s past—ones you’ve likely never heard.

“Shadows Over Cayuga” is a 9-block walking tour that inspects the darker history concealed in downtown Ithaca. Led by trained docents from The History Center, this 60–70 minute experience shows you the (metaphorical) fingerprints of criminal deeds left in our contemporary environment.

Through historic images, newspaper headlines, and jail records we’ll show you a chilling array of crimes (is this even better than a podcast? We think so!).

Proudly sponsored by MOnks on the Commons, located in the Ithaca Marriot Downtown.

120 S Aurora St, Ithaca, NY 14850

Innovation Junction: How Ithaca's West End Pioneered American Transportation

Join Us Next Summer For This Tour

  • Step into the stories of Ithaca’s West End, where waterways, rail lines, runways, and roads once pulsed with innovation and movement. This 90-minute guided walk explores the city’s transformation from a hub of canal boats and steamboats to the birthplace of Tommy planes, the home of the third electric streetcar system in New York State, and the scene of one of the most notorious traffic tangles in local memory: the “Octopus.” Along the way, we’ll visit historic sites connected to aviation pioneers, bustling boatyards, long-gone trolley lines, and grand passenger trains.
This half-mile route is designed for adults, students, locals, and visitors who want a deeper connection to Ithaca’s layered history of getting from here to there.

This tour was developed as a companion to “Trains, Planes, Automobiles: Buses, Boats, and Bikes,” our 2025 Exhibit on transportation history across Tompkins County.

About This Event

Once known by nicknames like “Sin City,” Ithaca, NY had a reputation that made national headlines—and it took on Prohibition long before the rest of the country. Over a year before the 18th Amendment took effect, Ithaca had already banned alcohol, sparking a local culture war that reshaped its neighborhoods, businesses, and social life.

Join us for a 60–70 minute walking tour through downtown Ithaca as we uncover the early 20th-century struggle between temperance advocates and those who pushed back. You'll visit key sites tied to saloons, reformers, hidden resistance, and the shifting identity of a college town at war with itself.

Perfect for adults, students, visitors, and locals alike—this 10-block journey brings history out of the archives and onto the streets.

Comfortable shoes encouraged. Curiosity required.
