P.L.A.C.E. Textile & Garment Workers Through HistoryForge w/ Eve Snyder

WHEN: Wednesday June 28th, 5:15-6:15pm - Rescheduled from - Wednesday June 7th, 5:15-6pm

WHERE: CAP ArtSpace, Located inside the Tompkins Center for History & Culture, 110 N Tioga St, Ithaca NY 14850

PRESENTER: Eve Snyder, HistoryForge Project Director

Where was the Pocketbook Factory? Who were the sewing machine agents of the 20th century and what can they tell us about home sewing habits? How can you identify a Ithacan from 1890 who held the patent for more than 27 toy designs, but has no occupation code on her census sheet?

Join Eve Snyder into an exploration for how we can use the wealth of information available on the Tompkins County HistoryForge project (tompkins.historyforge.net) to discover and understand the role of textile manufacturers, home sewing, and the exclusion of "women's work" in the census records of Tompkins County. Inspired by our current exhibit Knot Sew Fast Eve will share methods on how to use HistoryForge as a hyper-local research tool, and highlight some unknown stories of local workers and industries along the way.

Join Eve Snyder, HistoryForge’s Director, to learn more about this unique project and how to use it to research occupation and industry in Tompkins County. PhD Eve Snyder is the Historian at The History Center in Tompkins County (THC) and the Project Director for THC’s open-source community digital history project, HistoryForge. During her graduate studies, she developed a passion for the digital humanities as a tool for increasing public engagement in history.

This event is brought to you through the 'Knot Sew Fast: Patchwork of Tompkins County' exhibit, on display February-December 2023. Learn more at thehistorycenter.net/knot-sew-fast.
